Racing Extinction

I watched a documentary the other night called Racing Extinction, and it really made an impact...

Im no shark lover, in fact they kind of freak me out. But I have to say after doing a little bit of research they're actually pretty amazing. Did you know when a great white attacks, it rolls its eyes back in order to protect itself from debris and thrashing from its prey.

Sharks predate Dinosaurs, they have survived 5 global extinctions, however since man has come about their numbers have dropped 90%! Humans kill approximately 11,417 sharks an hour. 274,008 a day. 1,918,056 a week and 100,012,920 a year just by Finning.

If we carry on at this rate, they'll be extinct within 10-20 years.

Finning is the brutal act of cutting of a sharks fins and throwing it back into the ocean leaving it to die on the sea bed either from starvation, drowning (if they don't swim their gills cant produce oxygen) or being eaton alive by other animals.  This is done in order to provide the Asian 'Delicacy' Shark Fin Soup.

Not only is this horrific and cruel, but it has an effect on the rest of the sea life as well.
Sharks are at the top of their food chain, and considered a 'Keystone Species', removing them will cause the whole system to collapse. This will cause a massive imbalance in the ocean.

Global Warming

To be honest I always brushed off global warming, so it gets a little bit hotter, whats the big deal?
I love summer as next as the next person, I have good legs so any excuse to get them out, why not get them out!?
But its a little more serious then the temperature rising a couple degrees.

Methane lies underneath the polar ice caps, trapped for around 35 million years. You might think the methane would be secure under the thick layers of ice, but the harsh reality is, the Antarctic has been loosing a lot of ice.

Scientists believe that before the century is out, the ice caps would have melted enough to release all the methane trapped.
I'm no scientist, but methane and oxygen burn...

That seems pretty serious to me, at least enough to make me think I should walk more often rather than driving everywhere.

There are loads of small changes that everyone can make... watch the video or check out the website.

Everything we do has an impact.
